Lares Valley Trek: Offbeat
Like many travelers, I always had a soft spot for the search for less trodden, more "Authentic" local. Maybe it's just for bragging rights, or maybe because I was put off by the films exhibit "The Real Cancun", etc.. Whatever the cause, this strain of mine to choose the more remote and quieter path has always provided an overview of rich learning experiences and travel.
This has been a long standing ambition of mine to follow in the footsteps of the Incas on a href = "http://www.tucantravel.com/country/overview/peru"> adventure in Peru, and visit the ruins of Machu Picchu mountain. However, when I went online to research my options, it was revealed that the famous Inca Trail has become so busy with tourists UNESCO has asked the Peruvian government to require permits – 500 published a day – to prevent its overuse and degradation. I felt that this way was perhaps a little too well trodden already.
Few people know that there are actually more than one way Trekking in the Lost City of the Incas – The Inca Trail standard and a different route called Trek Lares. The hike includes two nights camping and one night hotel third in a small town called Aguas Calientes at the base Machu Picchu, which we visit on the last morning. The Inca Trail, however, lasted for three nights the runway and came directly to Machu Picchu early the fourth day.
For me, the Lares trek was easy to sell: I was recruited by descriptions of a cultural hiking that crossed the highlands Inca settlements. We hike passes above 4500 meters above sea level and meet at least other "traffic West. " And one more day I would put in my vacation would be a great recovery day if I needed it. What's better?
Day 1:
There was an air of excitement and nervousness that our mini-van filled with 16 colleagues and walkers set out from Cuzco to a mountain setting. Small, concrete bound, vibrant cities of Peru has given way to scenes of pastoral green fields. The mountains that once threatened in the distance now hovering above our heads, and soon after our bus began negotiating steep S-shaped turns as we climbed ever higher. The landscape has become distant and sterile, soil-covered boulders scattered at random if it appeared he had welcomed the stones of the day.
Finally we arrived at our starting point, a small town of Lares any hidden behind large, rocky outcrops. Our guide, a jovial man Peruvian with a face remarkably young, quick laugh and perfectly pressed shirt named Julio Cesar, made us enter the bus and we tentatively followed.
"Although we meet many people over the next three days, the last place you'll see anything that looks like a city, "Said Julio. Here we presented four locals who smiled awkwardly squat to us." A word of warning, "said Julio sign to men. "You can curse me all you want, no problem. But please, for your own good, try to be nice with these guys. "As our carriers, this group was responsible for cooking all our meals, setting up camp and take and, with the help of llamas, carry our bags. All we had left to do was walk, although we would soon discover that it would not be just a small walk in the park.
We left, walking single file on a thin trail. It was difficult at first and there was little talk. We already exceeded the altitude of Cuzco by 500 meters and, if the land was not stiff, I could hear heavy breathing to me. I noticed As we headed toward a cluster of houses and wondered if Julio was wrong when he said we would not see any towns along the trail. When we arrived in Huacahausi, our first stop, I discovered the answer: it depends on your definition of a city.
Huacahuasi was characteristic Most of the communities that we traverse over the next two days. These remote outposts consist of simple wooden structures scattered randomly on the empty plains. The locals became a familiar sight: children crestfallen, but playful with bright red, frost bitten cheeks wearing colorful woven hand of fabrics to keep them warm. A curious mom often seen in the background. Things here are very simple: no electricity, water Current or comfort. This was life in the Andes as it has been since time immemorial.
As our group gathered, Julio distributed bags of bread to each of us, he encouraged us all join hands for children. "Keep in mind of those who give candy as brushes teeth have yet to hit the Andes, he said, and struck a boy with a darkening of the teeth on the head.
We continued on a path rocky bottom. The day was getting late and the moon hung delicately on the distant mountains. The group settled into three distinct levels of ability and I tried to stay in the first, the second group with only a little further behind. The third, most slowly dragged older contingent.
This difference means that everyone with the time arrived in the camp, the sun had completely retired, the sky was studded with millions of stars and the temperature dropped to below zero. We huddled in the tent of foods, and breathed into our hands, listening to the wind whistles outside. Although the meal was excellent, a feast of many dishes, soups, potatoes and meat we ate in near silence exhausted before all of us without ceremony snuck out of our tents. All were aware that two days is by far the most difficult on the trek.
Day 2:
I'd say I woke up, but it would mean sleep, which never fully came. It is a common symptom of altitude and since we were at 4200 above sea level, I had disturbed sleep and shallow. But when I stuck my head out of the tent I still felt euphoric. The sky was bright blue and our camp is perched on a small flat surface, enclosed by rock walls. Beyond Camp stretched a valley, which wound up at a high. That, I suppose, was the first pass.
As carriers equipped llamas with packs of our group chatted to speculate on the level of difficulty ahead. "Hiking is like a construction site," Hidergaard Burke, a bubbly woman with a good behavior grandmother said. "Your mind directs the operation and your legs do the groundwork." As we started walking and I noticed the high altitude effect exerted on my muscles, which hurt me with a nasty burn. Grunt work effect. My lungs to breathe claimed against the frigid mountain air. I felt nauseous. I slowed down. The thing I learned was to be methodical, painstaking steps.
As we mounted, the path became less logical, often branching off into sub-trails that converged above. Finally, I note that the track has fallen into the distance. The portion was just beyond. I scurried up the final climb of loose shale and looked above horizon. I had arrived. On the other hand, a sharp drop and a lake shone in her womb. Even through the fatigue and altitude 4650m now – the view was spectacular and the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction has been fantastic.
The rest of the group met on the map and we all marveled at the site and took some deep breaths before continuing on together. There was a general feeling relief – it was downhill from here. We spent the rest of the day on a fairly easy rolling downgrade.
With the hike hard fact, the second night camp had a much more vivid. There was enough oxygen in the air to make a campfire, and after another meal more services, even the older group were able to stay up past 9 o'clock and chat.
Day 3:
In three days, we were plunged into the valley of Lares, who were outside the walls on either side of the runway.
It is an image that has stuck with me since the last morning of our trek. As I rounded a pass, a little girl and the boy sat patiently on a hill. The surroundings were bare and grass unforgiving cliff flanked on one side of the runway. There was not a single human habitation in sight.
familiar things ran in my head: Should not these children be in school? Where's their mother? Is it not those who are responsible for around wiping snot nose boy? And look at their clothes, they are in complete tatters! But as I approached and saw their clothing colors vivid and heard quietly Quechua, it occurred to me that the life of 4500 meters in the Andes on the remote has its own logic and I was witnessed one of the few places in the world where Western thought not entirely applicable. I gave them my final circle of bread they graciously accepted, and I continued my descent into the valley.
Soon the temperature warmed, and green fields seemed real populations emerged. Then, a road, then a car, and finally we finished our journey in the ancient Inca settlement of Ollantaytambo.
What comes next Trek should be the culmination of an adventure in Peru, we took the train to the small town of Aguas Calientes and the next morning a bus to Machu Picchu. And although ruins are truly a marvel, I could not help but consider that for most travelers, including those who arrived by the Inca Trail, Machu Pichu is the archaeological remains of a lost culture in the Andes. Thanks to the Lares Trek, however, I realized that just beyond those rocks inert and ruins is something even more fascinating: a flourishing culture of the Incas which remains almost completely unchanged by modernity and virtually untouched by foreigners.
