The Game Is Called Beautiful Golf
Football is often called the beautiful game, but when you really think that … Golf, now that is a beautiful game.
Images of exclusivity, where women are banned from the clubhouse and children lashed to watch as much as the putting green make the headlines very good, but paint an inaccurate picture of golf in the 21st century as one who plays the game will testify.
Reality is that the Royal and Ancient game is extremely popular and accessible, in fact, it is now considered a positive hip and cool – a four-ball with mates and beers to follow is to tell a perfect day of summer for many.
His appeal is too large – The rock stars like Robbie Williams and Alice Cooper regularly thrash a ball on the fairways and even the rich and beautiful in the graceful curves of supermodel Cindy Crawford and actress Catherine Zeta-Jones love better than to hitch their trousers golf and strutting their orders on the fairway nothing.
But the attraction of golf is not not playing the game but rather the very game itself – the physical pleasure of smacking a ball on the fairway to discover all the wonderful rituals and traditions surrounding the sport.
To explain to a non-golfer why golf is such a great game can be difficult. If you do not play it is likely that you just will not get it … early!
At the most rudimentary level, its appeal lies in the fact that there is some something innately satisfying about teeing up a ball and struggled too hard as you can. It evokes memories of youthful, throwing stones wherever possible and to see them hit their target – a garden shed window decommissioned or abandoned old car – and the resulting noise / noise crash success.
But before anyone talks about golf as hooligans unreconstructed still looking for a cheap thrill or adrenaline rush, golf proves strangely addictive for reasons very much more subtle.
It is part of the ritual involved – packing your bags golf for a day of golf is like planning a trek up K2 with all contingencies to cover – rain, sun, cold, hunger, thirst, new glove, pen, scorecard, tees, balls (lots of them) and the latest gadgets (Golfers love gadgets!).
Then there is the material itself to marvel – the tools of the trade. Ultimatum money irons, drivers with heads the size of Pluto, fairway woods, hybrids and putters variety infinitive. Golfers, as you discover if you never take the game, are suckers for gear. Classifieds Screaming promise Earth and despite the best known golfers unhappy go back for more, convinced that the last driver on the market is going to cure all the ills of golf.
Once you are ready to intervene, a bag loaded or trolleyed up essential gadgets (Retriever ball and umbrella are still very popular) the business starts right here – addiction gripping part of golf that keeps you coming back for more – the same round. Four hours pleasure, but also sprinkled with various doses of anguish, joy, frustration, hope and not a little despair.
The course is the place where the love story is sealed. Fields of exercise are great for practice, beautiful, a wet winter night, but each golfer life for the impeccable greens and sculptured fairways where it can measure their skills and abilities.
And the first tee on all the course brings with it the potential and the frisson of anticipation of what could be.
So what if you play off 25 and you could not hit the back of a cow with a banjo from three feet! It does not matter – the first shot of each new cycle marks the beginning something special. Eternally optimistic, it's still today the day you throw off the yoke of your disability, release your true potential and Blitz over as the great golfer that you know you really are.
In reality, then kicked course — you reload the shooting, the ball shoots like a heat seeking missiles, now in its ideal height of just one foot on the ground for all trip 90 of his court before coming to rest in a clump of rough diamonds on the adjacent hole.
DREAM for another series but there are still another 17 holes to go hey, Hold ON, if I get my five wood for that, actually manage to get a half decent connection, I'll still have a chance to get on the green, sink the putt and …
Golf is also about the challenge of fighting what the legendary Bobby Jones called Old Man Par – bites your mind and your ability against the run, the thinking and maneuvering of its pitfalls and hidden dangers vindictive, attempting to lower your handicap and God forbid, even winning medals per month.
But that's not all about competitions, drainage and putts for shaving your handicap. Golf is something more too, its beautiful and civilized, the long walks between holes to give much time for introspection and reflection when it contemplates a cycle that takes place before your eyes and take in the agelessness and greenery of all this, leaving days of life constraints days adrift away to be replaced by a sort of stupor golf happy.
The Scots have developed some goods things through the centuries – whiskey malt, Kenny Dalglish, the Edinburgh Festival, the best ever James Bond – but golf is probably his greatest contribution to modern life.
It is certainly led to a brilliant history and think that all the great players of all major eras of golf – from Old Tom Morris to Vardon, Hagen, Jones, Hogan, target = "_blank"> Arnod Palmer, Nicklaus, with Faldo, Ballesteros, Norman and Woods walked the same paths, played the hits and even face the same challenges, giving a sense of history unparalleled in almost any other sport.
