Writing/Role Playing Sample

The RPG writing sample is MANDATORY. Applications submitted without the writing sample will not be processed. It's okay for applicants to do more than one scenario, but keep in mind that the Processing Committee would rather receive just one exceptional writing sample than two or more mediocre ones. And if you have any questions concerning the writing sample or any other section of this questionnaire, please mail apply@starbaseavalon.com

Your sample will be checked for quality and style, and in addition to character development, is a major consideration when processing applications. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation, although not a determining factor in your writing style, are all considered when your application is reviewed. If numerous errors of these types are present, it may result in your application being returned to you with a request for your sample(s) to be rewritten. With this in mind, we strongly suggest you review your post for errors of this kind prior to submitting the form."

General Instructions

Write a post in third person narrative style, that acquaints us to your character in this situation. Your sample should be long enough to tell part of the story and be interesting but need not (and indeed should not or it will be too long) tell the whole story. You may chose to write in any time frame of the simulation (settling in at the beginning, the encounter, or the resolution).

What is important is the quality of your writing, and your imaginative skills. You do not have to resolve the situation, and if you do, it should not necessarily be resolved successfully. Even Jim Kirk had bad days.

Some of the scenarios are set in the Academy time frame during your senior (First Class) year. Some are simulations, and should considered to be part of your final exams. Alternative characters may want to set these samples either just prior or at the beginning of their careers.

Scenario I - Command Simulation

Communications to a mining outpost in a relatively unexplored sector have been lost. The sensor bouys nearby indicate recent Romulan activity in this sector. Although the Federation is now at peace with the Romulan's the treaty is considered fragile. Further there have been confrontations on this outpost with militant groups of minors in the past. A nearby nebula makes sensor readings difficult and has also hampered communications.

You are the Captain of the Starship Practice Run (or perhaps the Officer in Command of a Marine platoon, or the Wing Commander of a fighter group) and you are dispatched to remedy this situation, aiding the outpost within established Federation standards. You understand this is a test of creativity, wit and most of all character.

Scenario II -
Exploration/Diplomacy

The aptly titled "Voyager Scenario" offers a different type of challenge to Starfleet cadets.

You are on a starship that has been separated from the main fleet. The Commander locates a safe and quick route home only to find that it is inhabited by an alien race that the Federation has never encountered. First contact didn't go over too well and they've denied you passage through their system. They outnumber you so fighting your way through is not an option. Either you start negotiating or start working on a way to sneak your way through their territory otherwise it's going to be a long trip home. What assistance can you offer your Commander?

You may respond as either a section chief or as a crew member of that section.

Scenario III - Civilian Business

After all the years of scrimping and saving, you have finally gotten enough money to open up the shop of your dreams in the middle of the Promenade of Starbase 210. Before you can even open your doors, though, the business is already in trouble. The store has been broken into twice, customs has held up your merchandise for inspection, and the local gang is demanding a protection fee while you don't even have the money to pay the rent next month. But seeing as you've worked so hard to get here, you know that you can find a solution to your problems.

Scenario IV - Social Settings

Starfleet Academy isn't just about combat simulation and term examinations. Every cadet has some sort of social life from John Q. "life of the perpetual party" Earthboy to T'pogh, nerd girl Vulcan engineer and her study circle. Show us the "fun" side of your character in a social situation, such as a party, a first date, or a squad picnic and pool party.
